March Meeting

  • The meeting was attended by 31 members and visitors (incl committee).
  • Meeting was advised that there were not many swarms about now, but that wasps were becoming a problem and starting to attack hives. Such attacks can be successfully combated with the construction of an entrance baffle. This will have the added benefit of protecting the front corner of combs from attrition.
  • A variety of shrubs and trees currently flowering were demonstrated to the meeting. Included was a sample of wild ginger, which is the subject of an eradication programme by the Regional Council (though it is an excellent source of nectar for bees).
  • Ivan Pederson donated a splash cover for the club’s honey extractor as he had a spare.
  • Members were offered the chance to purchase woodware in June, with the price depending on quantity ordered. If there was sufficient interest, the frames could be assembled for a modest charge by the IHC workshop.
  • Wrae Duncan advised that he had converted both his hives to plastic frames. The merits and costs of these were discussed at length.
  • A demonstration of a plastic propolis collection mat was given. Members were advised that this was more effective if it was rubbed with grass before use to reduce the plastic gloss finish and scent.

The results of the Honey Competition were announced:

    1st: John Hobson
    2nd: Richard Hatfield
    3rd: Cliff Holstein

Creamed Honey:
    1st: Geoff Monk
    2nd: Wrae Duncan

2nd: Wrae Duncan (March ‘96 vintage)
