May 97
- The meeting was attended by 32 members and visitors (incl committee).
- Members were reminded to complete the Hobbyists Statutory Declaration fro
exemption from the Commodities Levy and to forward it to the NBA after witnessing by a JP
or a solicitor. Note that each beekeeper will receive a copy of the declaration direct
from the NBA, so any members who dont have one will need to wait until then.
- Advice was given that Brian Baggott of Paraparaumu was giving up beekeeping and
therefore had some equipment for sale.
- A discussion of pollen traps and the uses of pollen enlightened members with the
information that pollen traps should go on in late spring when critical brood rearing was
past. Pollen could be sprinkled on cornflakes etc as an additive, and it was believed to
be useful in preventing prostrate problems.
- Richard Hatfield advised that he was taking orders for new woodware.
- Ivan Pedersen produced some unknown beekeeping equipment he had been given and sought
members opinions as to its purpose. Frank Lindsay identified the items as a drone
collector and three old fashioned queen cell cages.
- Alan Hamilton from the order of St. John spoke to members on basic first aid with
particular emphasis on first aid in the field. This included coping with fractures and
multiple beestings. On completion of his talk he was thanked by the President and
presented with a variety of honeys and a souvenir teaspoon.
Meeting closed at 9:40 pm with supper.
