June 97

  • The meeting was attended by 21 members and visitors (incl committee).
  • The July meeting is the last date on which orders for new woodware will be accepted.
  • Newsletters had been received from Hawkes Bay and Taranaki B/K Assocs.
  • Only one claim for compensation from the BL fund had been received.
  • In response to a member’s query regarding crowding and hanging-out, it was agreed that the extended fine weather had resulted in most hives containing more brood and drones than usual, and that nectar and pollen was still being collected. Frank Lindsay warned that this abnormal hive population could lead to starvation and swarms in early spring.
  • The warm autumn had also resulted in the current flowering of kamahi, rata, and Kermandec Is. pohutukawa which was providing unseasonal food sources for bees and consequently prolonging brood rearing.
  • Destruction of hives with BL was briefly discussed. While it is necessary to burn all frames and bottom boards, supers and roofs can be dipped in hot wax to kill any BL spores.
  • Bill Allen demonstrated to members, his method of wiring frames using a wiring board and embedding foundation in the frames using an old electrical transformer to heat the wires. Other members also explained their variations for wiring frames, both with and without boards.
  • Frank Lindsay demonstrated his jig for nailing frames in batches of ten. This ensured that the frames stayed square and speeded up the process considerably.

Meeting closed at 9:25 pm with supper.
