NOTICE TO ALL WELLINGTON, MANAWATU AND WANGANUI BEEKEEPERS

As you are probably aware from news releases last week, recent hive surveys have detected varroa mites at three new apiary sites – Mangaweka, Marton, and Haywards Hill, all some distance south of the existing hive movement control line. Furthermore, extensive surveys are now underway in these areas to determine the size of the outbreak and therefore the best course of action.

In the meantime, the Wellington Beekeepers Assoc has decided to host its own varroa workshop on Sunday 29 September at Te Horo for Club members and any other Wellington, Manawatu and Wanganui beekeepers who may be interested in attending. Both MAF and AgriQuality representatives will be there and we envisage the format will be similar to those AgriQuality varroa control workshops run nationwide several months ago. Unlike the previous workshops however, we will use several hives on-site for practical demonstrations on the various methods of varroa control available.

Date: Sunday 29 September

Time: 10am to 2pm

You will Need to bring: Beesuit & gear; lunch; chair

Morning tea will be provided

Cost: $5 (Wgtn Beekeepers Assoc members) $10 for all others

Venue: Michelle Knight’s property – 180 Sims Road, Te Horo

Directions: turn off SH1 at Te Horo onto Te Horo Beach Road (café and museum on the corner). Sims Road is the only road on the right off Te Horo Beach Road (approx 3km from turnoff). Michelle’s gate is 1.8km down Sim’s Road and her name and number are on the gate. Her house is 1km north along an all-weather grass track.

If you are interested in coming, please contact one of the organisers before 21 September, so that we can ensure we have adequate facilities and refreshments available.
